NIGHTFALL
The world of Kalgash · after Asimov
For two thousand and forty-nine years, six suns have wheeled over Kalgash, and no living soul has ever seen darkness. Tonight, the suns will set — one by one — until only red Dovim remains. And then the unseen moon will swallow even Dovim, and the Stars will come out.
They say the Stars burn the mind of anyone who beholds them unprotected. They say every civilization before ours burned itself down, clawing for light. Gather wood while the suns still shine. Plant torches. Reach the Observatory. Keep a flame between yourself and the sky.

THE STARS
your mind has gone with the light
You looked too long into the thirty thousand suns, and something in you went out like a candle. Somewhere behind you, a city is burning — its people setting fire to everything they love, just to see.
DAWN
you kept the flame
Onos breaks the horizon and the Stars dissolve like salt in water. You are among the few on all of Kalgash who watched the naked sky and did not burn. The cycle begins again — 2,049 years until the next darkness. Or you may simply walk, and remember.
