About the collection
A prototype visual browser
This independent prototype presents 115,293 pages predicted to contain illustrations across the 1st through 14th editions of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, spanning 1768–1929. Scans come from volumes preserved through Internet Archive sources.
It is not an official Britannica product. The dataset card identifies these pre-1930 materials as public domain by publication date.
Accessibility
Designed for more ways of reading
This prototype is designed toward WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the technical standard in the ADA Title II web rule. It includes semantic controls, visible focus, non-pointer book navigation, status announcements, known-metadata image descriptions, responsive reflow, sufficient target sizes, and reduced-motion and forced-colors support.
- Use the “Skip to archive controls” link to bypass navigation.
- Use Tab to reach controls and Left/Right Arrow keys in the book.
- The magnifier is supplemental; zoom buttons provide a keyboard alternative.
